The Institute has supported projects, programs and events involving environmental sustainability since 1975. Originally founded as the Round Valley Institute for Man and Nature it renamed itself in 2010 to embrace national and international projects areas. The Institute is a nonprofit organization currently focusing on the issues of global climate change, poverty reduction, community building and food security. The Institute addresses the issues providing certification, planning and implementation of carbon credit, agroforestry, agroecology programs. The Institute uses its Community Circles Program to develop certified regenerative and organic food cultivation, preserving and processing as well as branding products for local, regional and international markets. The Institute partners with affiliate but independent organizations named The Institute for Man and Nature in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, and Liberia. Community Circles projects are currently being implemented in Michigan, Colombia, Liberia, Nigeria, The Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  • Tebossar Philip Malula

    “Papa Phil” is a beloved leader in both the USA and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his native country. Few people possess the extraordinary patience, wisdom and diplomacy that Phil has that enables him to lead people steadily towards attaining difficult, complex, and lofty goals. Even fewer people possess these skills in business. Phil is that type of character, a strong but calm bridge between many beings, people of different culture and their beliefs and viewpoints. Phil Malula has 15 years experience in international trade and development, providing investors with market and risk analysis; distribution, marketing, licensing and joint venture transactions. He brokers access to government entities in Sub-Saharan Africa and facilitate access to markets on the continent for individual investors, businesses, private firms and nonprofit organizations. Phil Malula received an MBA in International Business from Steven Henager College (Salt Lake City, UT, USA), after receiving a Bachelors degree in Business Management from Westminster University(Salt Lake City, UT, USA) and a Law degree from ULK (Université Libre de Kinshasa) DRC

  • Emily Mattison

    PROJECT LEAD
    Emily has studied and worked simultaneously in the areas of regenerative organic agriculture, sustainable architecture, and urban design over the last 45 years. She studied Biology, Urban Design and Architecture at Stanford University, Environmental Design at the University of Georgia, and Field Biology at the AMNH Southwestern Research station in Arizona as well as Art History at Stanford University in Florence, Italy. Her focus has always been on environmental sustainability, indigenous wisdom, appropriate economic development, appropriate technology and since 1997 has studied and worked on carbon neutral plans-evaluations. She has worked in non-profit and for-profit sectors and on both micro and macro projects. She has initiated and operated numerous ventures since the 1970’s.

  • Thyrophon L. Mungono

    SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
    As an electrical engineer, Mr. MUNGONO worked for SNEL (the Congo national electricity company) as the Head of Direct Current Transmission Division in Inga, Western Region. He participated in the construction of the high-voltage transmission line, directing current Inga Kolwezi from construction to operation. He then joined the International ABB Group in DRC. He has experience on the design and operation of THTCC systems for having worked for two years in Sweden at the ABB office where he participated in the studies projects such as Three Gorges (China) and Outaouais (Canada). He has participated in several technical audit missions organized for the improvement of SNEL networks in DRC. He held the position of Deputy Project Manager as a consultant for projects financed by international donors (World Bank, AfDB, kfW, etc. (’04-’08). Mungono is a professor at ISTA (Institut Superieur des Techniques Appliquées) since 2004

  • Charly Lamba

    BOARD MEMBER
    Charly Lamba is a tireless, exhuberant and enthusiastic advocate for the environment of his country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Charly is a native of the Province of Kisangani, specifically, Sud Ubangi-Bozene. The area is known primarily for it’s heart stopping Falls on the Congo river, which traditionally, and currently, force all forms of transportation and distribution of goods to find alternate routes around the Falls. This natural occurrence, over time, has created a regional identity involving communication and trade, and as no exception to this standard, Charly is well versed in these attributes, having started his career training in Agricultural Diplomacy at the Bongisa Institute in 2004. He holds a degree in Agronomy, specialising in Forestry Science at IFA-YANGAMBI University.

  • Prince Mbuta Ndenge

    Regional Implementing Team Lead
    Prince Ndenge is based in the community of Basoko in Bandundu on the border of the Provinces of Kwilu and Mai-Ndome at the confluence of the Kwango, Kwilu and Kasai rivers. He has worked in the rainforest from this base here since 2015. The region is on the edge of some of the most impressive and important rainforest in the world. Prince is an Agricultural Engineer, a masters, trained at both the University of Kinshasa and at the University of Lubumbashi in agronomy and agricultural engineering. Currently, Prince is a manager for the CAFI funded project known as the Mai-ndombe Integrated Program for the Reduction of Emissions related to Deforestation and Forest Degradation (PIREDD MAI- NDOMBE) under the supervision of the World Bank, Executed by the FRMi-WWC consortium.

  • Samuel Larson

    Board Member - IFMAN DRC
    Sam is a key player in the Community Circles program for the Institute for Man and Nature – Congo in the 16,000,000 Hectare carbon credit REDD+ project area including the community economic development planning for the forest communities in the Peatlands and Pygmy Tribal region. Previously, Sam was managing director of Rainforest Capital, a private equity conservation fund in San Francisco, California, with 3,400 acres of land, sustainable agriculture and ecotourism enterprises under management, and a $14-million family office investment of mixed equity and debt. Before Rainforest Capital, Sam was founder and CEO of Ceiba Forestry, where he developed investment opportunities for projects integrating agroforestry, clean technology, and biodiversity conservation in Latin America, the Caribbean Basin, and Africa.

  • Dr Nadine Laporte

    GIS & RS Specialist Advisor

    Dr. Laporte is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Forestry at the Northern Arizona University (USA). Her work focuses on applications of satellite imagery for mapping, monitoring, managing and conserving tropical forests. She has spent some 30 years building institutional and human technical capacity for governments and NGOs in Africa, including establishing a research office in central Congo. Dr. Laporte’s research has influenced tropical forest policies and increased transparency in the environmental sector. A central piece of her technical capacity building activities has focused on remote sensing and GIS training of young analysts and scientists in order to reduce national science and technology gaps. She developed an “Integrated Forest Monitoring System for Central Africa”, combining fine scale satellite imagery information with field observations to improve forest management practices in the logging sector, as well as the “Protected Area Watch for the Albertine Rift” to promote forest and wildlife conservation in Eastern Africa.

  • Noel Casserly

    Sustainable Development Advisor
    Noel worked for many years with the Irish Government in the areas of environment, climate change and sustainable development where he led the Irish delegation at UN international negotiations on climate change (UNFCCC) and previously was Director of Ireland’s National Council for Sustainable Development (Comhar SDC). Noel has also worked as a consultant on Climate Finance to Irish Aid, at the Department of Foreign Affairs, and is on the UN roster of national experts for climate change, as nominated by the Irish Government. Noel has worked on consultancy for capacity building on climate action and sustainability in southern Africa and in Ghana.

In tandem with this, their relationships with international finance will assist with securing the necessary funding to deliver Soutenir to the very highest level. MèreMer is a technology company operating at the intersection of fintech and climatetech. Their platform supports and validates climate-positive projects and connects them to the carbon-offsetting, ESG and sustainability requirements of the corporate sector.

    Aidan is based in West Cork, Ireland and is CEO of MèreMer. Following 20+ years with DIAGEO, he co-founded a tech company in 2011 where they delivered bespoke solutions to major organisations such as Capita Symonds (London), Ulster Bank (Dublin), and the Irish education system (various), before focusing entirely on the creation of technology to support positive climate action.

    A global leader in the study and measurement of unlocking habitats to combat climate change. His papers on Earth Observation and Remote Sensing as they pertain to the measurement of carbon stocks have been universally well received. He is also a lecturer and researcher in Climate Change Mitigation at Hue University, Vietnam.

  • Lev Gently

    Climate Change Law Specialist
    Lev is a lawyer specialising in climate change law as well as transaction and investment structuring and implementation. He has extensive experience in international climate and carbon market policy including in the voluntary carbon market and the evolving mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. His experience also includes advising clients on international asset and project financings as well as domestic and cross-border renewable energy and carbon project development. Lev previously worked in leading US and international law firms in London, Singapore and Sydney. Philip Lee LLP is a full-service corporate and commercial law firm with its headquarters in Dublin and with offices in London and San Francisco.

Created and handled the Fellows Fund Raising Programme for Westminster Abbey. Handled commercial rights to 3 x FIFA World Cups, Welsh & Scottish Rugby Union Football League, and the first professional British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour to South Africa in 1997.

    Mr Emery Brusset specialises in social performance evaluation with a particular interest in fragile situations. After working as a field officer in UN humanitarian missions in Iraq, Bosnia, Sudan and Rwanda, Mr Brusset worked full time from 1995 collecting primary data and analysing impact for prestigious public and private sector clients. He is a graduate of Yale and the London School of Economics, and lives in France.

  • Chris Horwood

    Although Chris Horwood has recently been focused on environmental protection, afforestation, carbon forestry and ecological recovery, he is also a migration specialist, manager, development economist and research analyst who has worked over the course of 30 years on a wide range of assignments in over 20 countries. He has worked with governments, the UN / multinational organizations and NGOs as well as running his independent consulting agency, Ravenstone Consult. Mr Horwood holds a BA in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia, an MSc in Development Economics (London), as well as an MSc in Forestry (Bangor) - with a specialist course in Carbon Forestry (Freiburg). His Forestry dissertation was on agroforestry and the voluntary carbon markets in Kenya.

    Mr Phillip Griffin worked in banking and risk analysis before joining Social Terrain to manage its operations. For over 30 years he has travelled to the Middle East and central Asia, and Horn of Africa for clients. Mr Griffin has a BA in Economics and Public Administration as well as a certificate in evaluation for humanitarian aid from Overseas Development Institute (ALNAP).

  • Julien Brusset

    Social Terrain
    Mr Julien Brusset worked as a volunteer for philanthropic organisations before joining a defence company, focussing on project management in technological innovation for northern Europe and Latin America. After four years he joined Social Terrain in 2020 as an evaluation consultant in charge of the digitalisation of data collection, analysis and presentation. He holds a Bachelor in War Studies from Kings College, and a Master in Management from the London School of Economics and CEMS.
